To celebrate the launch of Independent Birmingham’s brand new card design (and isn’t it pretty?!), the Birmingham Cocktail Weekend team has picked out our favourite tipples from some of the city’s independent hidden gems.

For those of you who aren’t acquainted with Independent Birmingham yet, let us introduce you: founded in 2014, Independent Birmingham set out to unearth the city’s best-keep secrets with the hope of inspiring people to explore Birmingham’s lesser known places and rediscover the city. This year, there are loads of Independent Birmingham bars and restaurants signed up for #BCW2016 and we’ve picked out three of them to tell you a little more about…

Located in the Mailbox overlooking the canal, Gas Street Social is a vibrant bar-come-restaurant with socialising embedded at the heart of everything it does. Known for serving up its kooky cocktails in carafes and punch bowls, Gas Street also turns its hand to distilling its own syrups, creating innovative craft recipes from scratch and even having one of its signature cocktails on tap! So if you’re looking for somewhere sociable and stylish to enjoy a couple of bevvies after work, a trip to Gas Street is definitely in order! We’d recommend giving the Lunar Society Punch a try. A summer cocktail served in Gas Street’s statement punch bowl, it is fresh, floral and fruity – perfect for sharing with friends on a sunny Birmingham Saturday afternoon!

Treating diners to a true taste of South America, Bodega rustles up spicy, flavourful food amidst a laidback atmosphere. Its masterpiece of a cocktail menu offers a huge range of authentic South American classics, as well as a large selection of its very own distinctive creations. The Poloma is an absolute must-try for those who haven’t already. Billed as Mexico’s favourite tequila cocktail, this drink is bursting full of flavour but is definitely not for the faint-hearted. The tantalising tipple is made by combining three simple ingredients: tequila, fresh limes and grapefruit soda; making for a fresh, zingy drink that packs a huge punch!

Fast becoming renowned as a cocktail bar in its own right, Birmingham’s favourite Dim Sum restaurant has been shaking up an eclectic array of innovative oriental-inspired concoctions. Chung Ying’s famous Zodiac cocktail menu has become hugely popular amongst its Colmore Row customers, with each individual drink embodying the character of the animal they represent. Our personal favourite is the Crouching Tiger Mai Tai – a tropical take on an all-time classic.

Gas Street Social, Bodega and Chung Ying are just three of the Independent Birmingham venues headlining this year’s line-up. They will be joined by over 30 venues at BCW from 15-17 July! See you there.
